Bed bugs are small, reddish-brown blood sucking, wingless insects that are a parasite of birds and mammals. Bed bugs often nest in the bedroom in furniture feeding on the occupants. Bed bugs can live up to a year without eating and spread most commonly via traveling hosts.

Getting bed bugs is a horrible experience. The bites are typically red and itchy. It can take days for redness or welts to appear so you might not know where you were when you got bitten. Bites look very similar to mosquito bites. They do, however, have a tendency to bite many times to find a good blood source. The good news is that they do not transmit diseases.

This insect does not build underground colonies like subterranean termites do, and do not need soil for survival. Drywood colonies are much smaller than the subterranean or dampwood colonies, and at colony maturation, there is only about a few hundred members. It takes years for a colony to mature enough to produce swarmers.

Drywood termites can get into homes through a piece of furniture that is already infected. The table you bought may bring a colony of drywood termites directly into your home.

Subterranean termites are the type of termites that cause the most damage of any termite species. Subterranean termites make their colonies in the earth and attach their mud tubes to cellulose debris found on the subarea floor. The mud tubes allow them to reach food sources and protect themselves from open air. Mud tubes look like long tunnels made of wood and soil. Subterranean termites eat wood 24/7 using saw toothed jaws to bite off small fragments of wood. Discarded wings near doors and window ills indicates swarmers have entered and infested homes. Over time subterranean termites will critically damage structures and things like books and magazines.

Rodents are gnawing mammals including mice and rats that often nest within structural walls, feeding on the items found in the building. Mice in their natural habitats are primarily nocturnal, although some will occasionally forage during the day.

Finding the nest is the biggest obstacle when dealing with drywood termites. They form small colonies and stay hidden. If you spot unusual holes in baseboards or windowsills, it’s wise to have it checked out by a professional. Drywood termites bore small holes in the wood they infest, pushing out discarded waste in the form of pellets (frass) that accumulates under these openings. Pellets look like granules of sand and are a prime indicator of the presence of drywood termites. Check for pellets on the floor, then look above where you see the pellets and inspect the wood for holes. Tiny holes may be in a furniture or in cabinets. If you see pellets on the floor and cannot find the hole – sweep up the pellets and monitor the area.
